Census 2000 counted 2.1 million adopted children in the United
States, living in 1.7 million households (1.6-out-of-100 households).* Among
these households, 82% had one adopted child, while 15% had two and 3% had three adopted
children. |
|
|
While adopted children in the U.S. are predominantly
native-born (87%), 13 percent are adopted from a foreign countryand the figure is
growing. The number of immigrant visas issued to orphans coming to the United
States for adoption increased from about 7,000 in 1990 to nearly 18,000 in 2000*. Nearly
half of foreign-born children are from Asia, with Korea being the largest single-country
source at 22% (see table below for other single-country data). Another third are from
Latin America, and 16% are from Europe, although this number has recently increased. Of
all adoptions in 2000, twenty-seven percent of children under six years old were from
Europe and most of those (82%) were from Russia
or Romania. |

Census 2000 is the first census to include "adopted son/daughter" as one of the
options under the relationship-to-householder question separate from "natural born
son/daughter" and "stepson/stepdaughter." There is no trend data from the
1990 Census. |
